Furnace Filter It’s recommended to change your furnace filter at least every three months, and it’s an even more important task to remember to schedule throughout these winter months. Our furnaces work hard to keep our homes warm and comfortable during the cold season! You should check your filter on a monthly basis, and even if it’s been less than three months since it was last replaced, if it looks dirty it’s time to change it out.

Keep your home comfortable is obviously an important reason to remember to replace your furnace filter, but it’s not the only reason! Why else should you make sure you’re swapping that filter out every three months? Here’s a list of the top five reasons to change your air filter regularly:

1)      Improve the air quality in your home. A dirty filter will affect the air quality in your home, and can make things especially difficult if anyone in the family has asthma or allergies. A clean filter helps get rid of pet dander, pollen, dust and other dirty particles that add to poor air quality.

2)      Keep your HVAC system working properly. Forgetting to change the air filter can affect the way your furnace is working, and this can lead to costly repairmen or maintenance calls. If the filter gets clogged, this will affect the way the air flows through the system and can cause it to overheat.

3)      Decrease your energy bill costs. When the filter is dirty, your system has to work much harder to pump the same amount of air through the vents. If it takes more energy for the system to work properly, your energy costs will start to increase. By swapping out the filter every three months, you’ll see a savings of as much as 15% on your utility costs and energy bills.

4)      Extending the life of your furnace. Did you know that a dirty filter is actually one of the main reasons an HVAC system will break down? Overheating causes the motors to work harder and eventually wear out. Keep your furnace working as long as possible by replacing the filter regularly.

5)      Maintaining a clean system. Quite obviously, a dirty air filter can equal a dirty furnace. And a dirty furnace leads to most of the issues mentioned above!
